review summary
Sunflower Lab works hard and has a competitive price. The code quality still needs testing, but the frontend design is fantastic. The time difference and language barrier have caused some problems, but the team is flexible and maintains consistent communication. Test users say the app looks great and functions well.

Background
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the co-founder of an app called Press App Sports, a new social media platform like Instagram but for posting sports highlights. It’s a place for athletes to build a fanbase for people who want to follow their progress.
Opportunity/Challenge
What challenge were you trying to address with Sunflower Lab?
We needed someone to design and build the app.
Solution
What was the scope of their involvement?
We had a week-long discovery phase with their CTO, and we came up with a roadmap for the iOS and Android apps. I told Sunflower Lab exactly what to do, and they did all of the design and dev. We iterated multiple times for each phase, sending them notes until it was finalized.
The app has a top trending page with the most viewed videos from the last seven days. Users can filter content by level, sport, gender, location, and even commitment status. The home feed and repost feature are working, and profiles are exactly what we asked for. We’ve launched the iOS version, but the Android still has a few more steps before it’s ready.
What is the team composition?
We researched quite a few companies. We got quotes from four of them, and Sunflower Lab had great references and an affordable price, so we hired them.
How did you come to work with Sunflower Lab?
They were referred to us by one of our VC investors.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $60,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We began working together in December 2017, and the work is ongoing.
Results & Feedback
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We plan on bringing in a third-party analyst to review Sunflower Lab’s code when we’re further along. So far, we’ve gotten positive feedback from users who say the app looks and functions great. It’s had a few bugs, but nothing major.
How did Sunflower Lab perform from a project management standpoint?
Our communication is manageable—they’re located in India, so English is their second language. We communicate via Slack, and their response time is incredible. We have weekly meetings to go over project details, but they’ll have more meetings if needed. I can just tell them we need to talk, and within 20 minutes we’ll be video conferencing.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re highly responsive and willing to work outside of regular business hours. When we needed to submit a build to Apple, for example, a developer from Sunflower Lab was up until three in their morning, their time.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Because English isn’t their native language, they often made simple spelling mistakes at the beginning of our engagement. But now that we know that, we’re better and providing them with the exact text that we want on the frontend.
Advice for potential customers?
Be willing to get up early to meet with them. The time difference means their work day begins when it’s still early morning here, and I’ve found that giving them notes at five in the morning helps them be more productive throughout the day.
